Obituary

William H. "Sam" Burgess, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, was called to his Heavenly Home on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at the age of 78. He was born on November 12, 1947, in Belton, South Carolina, to Horace "Jack" and Claire Williams Burgess.

Sam, as he was known by family and friends, married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Deborah D. Hamilton, on March 8, 1969, at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado. Together, Sam and Deb shared 57 wonderful years of marriage and raised five children: Sam, Jr., Brad, Scott, Kristy and Frank "Tony,". While his children were his greatest pride and joy, it was the love he shared with Deb that truly defined him. Through every season of life, he never stopped dreaming of new adventures with her, always making plans to see the world by her side. Their enduring love was a testament to his loyalty, devotion, and the deep bond they shared.

Sam was a proud United States Air Force Veteran who served his country in Thailand and Okinawa during the Vietnam War. He was a true patriot whose love for his country was a lifelong commitment. He served with great pride and found immense joy in seeing his sons, Scott and Tony, follow in his military footsteps.

Before his retirement, Sam worked in telecommunications. He was a member of V.F.W. Post #4376 in Seven Points, Texas and the American Legion Post #310 in Gun Barrel City, Texas.  Most importantly, Sam was a devoted Christian who attended Rockin Country Church in Kemp, Texas. His faith was central to his life, and he often shared his favorite Bible verses with those around him, offering encouragement and hope.

Sam also had a remarkable gift for making people laugh. His quick wit, warm smile, and joyful spirit could light up any room, leaving everyone around him feeling welcomed and uplifted. He had a way of bringing comfort and happiness to others, and his presence will be deeply missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace "Jack" and Claire Burgess; his in-laws, Jack and Ruby Hamilton; and his two sons, Scott Burgess and Frank "Tony" Burgess.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife, Deb Burgess of Gun Barrel City; daughter, Kristy Green and husband Michael of Bremond; sons, Sam Burgess, Jr. and wife Tracie of Temple, and Brad Burgess and wife Crystal of Bryan; daughters in law, Jennifer Burgess of Franklin and Sabrina Burgess of Denham Springs, Louisiana; siblings, Pat Fisher and husband Dan, Elaine Wilbanks and husband Mack, Jim Burgess, Larry Burgess and wife Kathy, Dave Burgess and wife Sharlene, all of South Carolina, and Frank Burgess of Florida. He is also survived by his 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Glen Hamilton and wife Linda, numerous nieces and nephews, and a whole lot of friends.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 11:00 A.M. at Wheelock Cemetery, with Dale Wells officiating.
