Volney L.
"Bubba" Alston, Iii
Aug 28, 1944 — Feb 26, 2020
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Volney L. "Bubba" Alston III. Bubba was born on August 28, 1944 in Beaumont, Texas to Volney L. Alston Jr and Neddy Dee Alston. Bubba is survived by his wife, Mary Foyle Alston, three children Volney L. "Rusty" Alston IV (Angela), Cherie Del Alston (Kirk) and W. Warren Alston, 7 grandchildren, Arturo, Cary, Alex, Aubrey, Cody, Micheal and Savannah, as well as three great-grandchildren, CJ, Rose and Lily.
He attended Beaumont ISD and was known for his practical jokes that were not always appreciated by the faculty. Let's just leave it at the fact that cherry bomb fireworks were banned shortly after Bubba got to High School.
Bubba was no stranger to work, while still in High School he worked at the Jefferson Theater in downtown Beaumont. He spoke fondly of those days, the movies he saw, the friends he made, and would at times reminisce of a simpler way of life that was the 1950s.
In 1961 Bubba joined the Marine Corps. He attended Basic Recruit Training at Parris Island, South Carolina and had many fond memories and great stories of that time in his life. Following boot camp Bubba had a number of different jobs in the Marine Corps some of his duty stations included Key West, Florida at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis and Dominican Uprising where he experienced combat for the first time. Afterwards Bubba's military career included tours in South East Asia at the height of the Vietnam Conflict, where exactly, I can't say. When asked where he was at in South East Asia he would simply say that he was "Never in Cambodia, Laos, or Vietnam" because that's what the Corps told him. It was more than once that his children would hear him say "Those were the best years of my life".
Bubba decided in 1966 that he had enough of going to exciting, adventurous places filled with people who were shooting at him and told the United States Marines that he was done. Being a former marine named Bubba he did what would only come natural for a man in his position, he became a banker. He attended college at Georgia Southern and Palmer Junior College, where he always excelled in his studies. During his career he attended many continuing education classes to stay current in the latest the banking industry had to offer. He excelled in his profession and received numerous awards throughout his career. He retired from Citibank in 2008 as a Senior Vice-President of Student Lending.
In his spare time Bubba was an avid golfer who played numerous courses all over the nation. Some of his favorites were Kiawah and Seabrook Island courses in Charleston, South Carolina. On February 23, 1981 Bubba achieved what few professional golfers ever do. He hit a "hole in one" on the 17 th hole of the Calvert Country Club Golf Course. Bubba was an avid football fan whose favorite teams included the Dallas Cowboys, Baylor Bears and Carolina Gamecock's. He was a member of the Baylor Bear Foundation and season ticket holder for over 40 years. Besides golf and football one of his favorite pastimes was to play video games with his kids, grandkids, and friends.
He was a dedicated and loyal member of First Baptist Church of Calvert, Texas for over 40 years.
Bubba was a Master Mason with Hammerton Lodge Ancient Free Masons #332 in North Charleston, South Carolina for over 50 years.
None of these things mentioned could take the place of his greatest love, his family. Nothing made Bubba happier than to be with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. No matter if it was time spent eating a meal together or just simply watching television as a family, when family was around Bubba was happiest.
Services are scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at the First Baptist Church in Calvert, Texas. Burial will follow in the Calvert City Cemetery. A visitation with family will be held on Monday, March 2, 2020 from 5:30 P.M.-8:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church in Calvert.
