Obituary

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Proverbs 31:30

Opal Rhea Hancock Green passed on to her heavenly home with family by her side March 21, 2022 at the age of 93.  Born to James and Minnie Hancock on May 25, 1928 in the Bishopville community, Opal made a lasting impression on all who knew her.  She attended Franklin schools and married Marvin Barnett in 1949 but was widowed in 1961.  She later married JW Green who she lost in 1974.  Opal was a caring mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.  Granny, as most people called her, lived a simple life but loved generously.  She loved sharing stories of her childhood recalling special times of riding in the wagon to church and listening to the radio on Saturday nights with her family.  Her sweet smile and gentle nature endured her to everyone she met.  Family knew there was always something to eat and sound advice to be had at Granny's house. Her unconditional love was evident.  She shown as a beacon of God's love to all around her.  She loved her Savior and wanted others to know Him, too. For years after the death of her second husband, Opal served hundreds of school children lunch each day at the Franklin ISD cafeteria.  There was lots of laughter to be heard.  The simplest things in life brought her such pleasure.   She loved passing down her knowledge to her family, whether quilting or gardening or cooking.  Opal loved spending time on the porch visiting with family and friends.  She had a way of making everyone feel important.  Even after she was limited in her activities, her persevering spirit was evident.
