Melvin Reed
Mccormick
Feb 6, 1936 — Nov 28, 2021
Melvin Reed McCormick, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 28, 2021 at 7:11 pm at his home in Hearne, Texas. After being diagnosed with Dementia in early 2020, his spirits and attitude remained loving, kind and gracious, but his health declined over the following months. He spent this time telling sweet stories, sharing Pawpaw's words of wisdom, and passing out lots of hugs and kisses.
Melvin graduated from Hearne High School in 1955, joined the National Guard and served under JF Kennedy's call to duty in 1961. Melvin loved to rodeo and calf rope so it was meant to be when he married his favorite barrel racer, his helper, and his love, Brenda Joyce Harzke, on December 16, 1965. They lived in Hearne, Texas while Melvin worked at his father's feed store and later Johnson Control. Always enjoying cattle and ranching, they purchased land near Wheelock, built their first home and move there October 1970. In that home, Melvin and Brenda raised four girls – Melinda Kay, Melissa Lea, Melanie Lyn, and Michelle Dea – that place will always be HOME to Melvin, Brenda and the 4M girls.
Being a self-taught welder, Melvin went to work with Drew Woods Inc. as a pipefitter and later moved to Garrett Mechanical, Inc. He would weld for over 53 years before retiring to be home with his girls. He loved spending time working at the barn and in his shop, tending to his cattle, barbequing for everyone that wanted to eat great brisket, and visiting with his friends.
Melvin was always available to help anyone who asked. You can drive miles of country roads and many of the pipe fences, entrances, cattleguards, and gates you see were built by him. He volunteered much of his time to the Robertson County Go-Texan Committee, the Robertson County Fair Association and was a lifetime member of the Houston Livestock show and rodeo committee.
One of Melvin's favorite sayings was "you're burning daylight", and he never did! Every day of his life he worked hard, lived life joyfully, cherished his friendships, took care of his family and LOVED his 4 girls with all his heart!
Melvin is preceded in death by his mother: Johnny Starkey McCormick and father: Coan Forrest McCormick.
Melvin leaves behind his wife: Brenda, his four daughters: Melinda, Melissa, Melanie, and Michelle, his four sons-in-laws: Spencer Scott, Glenn Welch, Terry Stellbauer, and Kent Stewart his ten grandchildren: Jake Stellbauer, Caleigh Scott, Jared Stellbauer, Sami Scott, Garrett Scott, McKalynn Welch, Kinley Haver, Nathan Scott, Gracelynn Welch and Laynie Haver, his brother and sister-in-law: Wayne and Wilma McCormick, his niece, Sabrina Saladino, his nephew: Michael McCormick and many loved cousins.
