Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Louise Stephens Corn announces the passing of their beloved matriarch. Our dear mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed at the age of 100 years, eight months and two days at The St. Joseph Manor in Bryan, Texas.

Louise was born September 7, 1920 and raised in the Easterly area and was a lifelong resident of Robertson County with the exception of the last few years that she resided at The Manor in Bryan, Texas.

She was born to Winfrey Buck and Ada Irene Towns Stephens. She is predeceased by her parents and siblings; Kay Pardoll, Edwin Winfrey, Marvin Joseph, Floyd Collins Sr, baby Vesta and baby Alfred;  she is also deceased by husband, Fermon (Furman Thomas) and her beloved grandson; Gary Wayne Corn.

Fermon, Louise and Fermon's nephew, Elmo Smith  and Octavia Mullins eloped on December 24, 1937 and were married at the Baptist Church in Gourdneck, in Robertson County by Brother Wade. Louise's affiliations with the Baptist faith begin in this small rural church where she was baptized in a clear running creek. Her last church membership was at The New Baden Baptist Church.

Survivors are son Ronald W. Corn and wife, Betty Corn of New Baden, daughter Beverly Corn Cox Miller and husband, Logan Miller of Marble Falls, and daughter Cynthia Corn Parker of Houston; three grandchildren Cheri Cox Doyle and husband Pat Doyle of Austin, John David Cox of Austin and Mamie Corn Bittick and husband, Darold Bittick of Cypress; three great grandchildren Elizabeth Doyle of Ferndale, Michigan, Gary Bittick of College Station and Halle Bittick of Waco. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

What an amazing woman that Louise became as she grew in her role of motherhood; a home maker that could walk into a kitchen where cupboards seemed bare and then present a delicious meal; beautiful cakes were her forte; Louise sewed many beautiful dresses for her two daughters and exquisite Western shirts with intricate yoke patterns for her son. Later, in her sewing days, she made cocktail dresses and wedding dresses; beautiful quilts and embroider work. Need to plant a garden, ask her for fail proof advice; canning without spoiled food, Louise could tell you how to do that also; When electricity came to the rural area a family friend taught her how to wire a house!!! Need a plumbing job; she knew how to perform that task also.

Louise is a sixth generation Texan and is descended from two Texas pioneer families; The Mitchell Garrison family who arrived in Texas around 1836 in Shelby County, 1850 in Panola and lastly Bell County, Texas. The Hugh Davlin family arrived in Montgomery County, Texas by 1840 and later moved to Robertson County. The Davlin descendents finally moved from the Owensville area and settled in the Lake area near Easterly. Both Mitchell Garrison and Hugh Davlin gave service to The Republic of Texas which qualifies descendents to become members of The Daughter's of the Republic or The Sons of The Republic of Texas. Louise was a proud member of the Hugh Davlin Chapter of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas and served as President of the chapter which originated in Easterly aka Acorn, Robertson County, Texas

Services will be held on Thursday, May 13, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. at  McCauley Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin, Texas. Burial will follow in the Easterly Cemetery aka Acorn Cemetery in Easterly, Texas.  A visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

The family wishes to thank the loving staff and physical therapist at St. Joseph Manor who helped take care of our mother as if she were the most precious person in the world.  Thank you with all our hearts.
