Letha Irene Tindle was born March 31, 1940 to Christine Bone Upchurch and Clifford Upchurch in Falls County, Texas and passed from this life on July 4, 2023 in Bryan, Texas.
Letha started school in a one room schoolhouse in the community of Carter-Munsch near the Falls on the Brazos. She lived much of her young days in the Tomlinson Hill community with her grandparents, Tom and Ada Windham. She was a 1958 graduate of Lott High School.
Letha married her high school sweetheart, Claude Tindle, Jr on July 17, 1958. They moved to Hearne the day after their wedding, and they made their home in Hearne all but a few years until 2009. Claude and Letha purchased the Dairy Queen in Hearne in early 1966 and Letha operated the store for forty years until their retirement in 2006.
From 1966-2006 Letha had hundreds of employees. Mrs. Tindle, as she was known by most of her employees and customers, was more than an employer. She was a counselor, mentor, mother, and disciplinarian if she thought it was needed. She was the best example of someone that would give the shirt off her back. She helped many families in the community that needed help with groceries, clothes, or finances. One employee said she just had that way of knowing if she needed a hug when she walked in and she would give her a big hug to help lift her spirits. One family said that once their mother was no longer able to get out, Mrs. Tindle would take her food from the DQ and sit and visit while she ate. She never met a stranger and loved to get to know her customers, even those that traveled through only a few times a year but always stopped at the DQ in Hearne. She believed in customer service and trained her employees that customer service and honesty were important, not only at work but in life.
Letha was an extraordinary cook and she loved to spend her spare hours in the kitchen preparing a home cooked meal for her family and friends.
Claude and Letha were huge supporters of the Robertson County Fair Association, Hearne Fire Department, Go-Texan and all community events, especially those of the youth in the community. They would spend hours at the county fair each year working the concession stand and helping out the youth by buying projects.
After forty years of DQ, Claude and Letha retired in June 2006. Their retirement was cut short by the passing of Claude in 2009 due to complications of his kidney transplant that he received in 1989.
Letha was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Tindle, Jr. and her parents, Christine "Tennie" Howard, Frank Howard, and Clifford Upchurch.
She is survived by children Claude W Tindle, III "Sonny" of Franklin and Bethany Dianne Fulton and husband Kevin of Franklin.
