Hubert Lee
Perkins
Jul 24, 1950 — Sep 21, 2023
Hubert Lee Perkins was born July 24, 1950 in Hearne, TX to Linnie Lee Perkins and Zula Mae Boyd Perkins. He went to join them in Heaven on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at his home in Franklin, TX. He was of the Baptist faith.
One of Hubert's biggest loves was playing baseball. It didn't matter if it was in a pasture out at Ridge with his cousins or on a real field. When he was younger, even after he had kids of his own, he played baseball. Even though there was no little league in Franklin or baseball team at Franklin School, he still found teams to play on around the area. He played on an intramural team in the Sour Lake/Beaumont area for several years. He was quite good, and everyone wanted him to be on their team.
After graduating from Franklin High School in 1968, Hubert was off to work at Alcoa in Rockdale. It didn't take him long to realize that he wanted something more, so it was off to Sam Houston in Huntsville, TX where he got a job as a guard for TDC.
He met Helen Larue of Crockett at Sam Houston in 1969, and they married in 1970. He worked and went to school and was four credits away from a degree in Criminal Justice when he took another career change and decided he wanted to go to pharmacy school. He transferred to The University of Texas in 1972, and received his Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy in 1975. Hubert and Helen moved to Sour Lake, TX where he helped open a new Walgreens Pharmacy in Beaumont, TX. They started their family there with the birth of Jason in 1982, and then Clint in 1987. He remained there until 1990, when they moved back home to Franklin, TX.
Hubert worked as a relief pharmacist for about four years, working in Bryan, Hearne, Jewett, Centerville, and Franklin before he bought the family pharmacy, Duffey Drug, in 1994. He bought the store from his brother-in-law, Dale Woodall, who wanted to make sure that the next owner provided the same personal service and relationship with customers that the store was known for. He shouldn't have worried because Hubert picked right up with the same personalized customer service. People loved Hubert and the interest that he took in their medications and treatment of their conditions as if they were all family. Hubert was only the fourth owner in 120 years. Maintaining the integrity of the Duffey Drug name was something he always kept in the forefront of his mind, and it was something that he was always proud of.
Besides his sons, Jason and Clint, Hubert was especially proud of his grandchildren, Canton and Kaylee Perkins. He loved spending time with them.
Hubert retired in 2018, and he and his family went on a couple of trips, but what he loved most was spending time at his beloved place at Camp Creek Lake. He loved having his family there for cook outs, fishing, and just hanging out and spending time together.
Hubert is survived by his wife of almost 53 years, Helen Perkins of Franklin; Sons, Jason Perkins and Clint Perkins of Franklin; Grandchildren, Canton Perkins, Kaylee Perkins and their mother, Kimberly Perkins all of College Station and Sister, Linnie Woodall of Franklin. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Deborah LaRue of Groveton; nieces, Toni, Terri, Traci and Amber and nephew, Lance and, last but not least, his cat, Lucy.
A memorial celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 24, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. at the Pridgeon Community Center in Franklin, Texas.
