Ernestine Katharina
Floyd
May 3, 1935 — Aug 27, 2025
Ernestine Katharina Modinger was born on May 3rd, 1935, in Munich, Germany to parents, Ernst Georg Modinger and Amalia Anna Modinger. She passed away peacefully on the morning of Wednesday, August 27th, 2025, in Franklin, TX at the age of 90 years old.
Ernestine was born in Munich, Germany and was raised along side her younger sister, Irmgard Modinger. At the time of Ernestine's childhood upbringing, her family faced many challenges and turmoil while living in Germany as it was at the time of World War II. Even with living through a time of war, Ernestine graduated grade school in the 9th grade, which is customary in Germany, and attended the necessary trade school to learn the skills and assets of clerical work/bookkeeping.
After trade school, Ernestine became a secretary/bookkeeper on McGraw Kaserne Base, an American Army base located in Munich. Throughout her employment on base, Ernestine advanced her career by becoming an essential part of the event planning team and having chance encounters with some famous people, including one of her all-time favorites, Tom Jones.
In 1969, at the age of 34, Ernestine made the pivotal decision to leave her extended family and friends in Germany to embark on a life altering journey of moving to America and settling in Houston, TX. Ernestine found work as a waitress at a local authentic German restaurant, The Old Munich Inn. Trusting in her hard work ethics, Ernestine advanced her career from wait staff, to then manager to eventually owner of the restaurant for 20 years. It was during her time at the restaurant that a certain customer captured her heart, her beloved late husband, Roy Malcolm Floyd. Roy and Ernestine married on September 22nd, 1979, and spent 42 years of wedded bliss together.
After spending the first part of their marriage in Houston, TX, Ernestine and Roy made the move for a quieter lifestyle in 2000 by settling in Franklin, TX, which brought them closer to family. After their daughter opened the beloved local donut shop, Kountry Daylight Donuts, Roy and Ernestine became the smiling faces behind the counter, AKA "Mom and Pop" and managed the shop full-time. While Roy became known for his charming smile and witty canter, Ernestine melted hearts with her unique accent and riveting, spellbinding stories from her firsthand accounts of her life. After the closing of the donut shop in 2008, Ernestine continued with other work endeavors until finally retiring at the golden age of 83. In the latter part of their lives together, Roy and Ernestine embarked on many adventures through their love of travel, visiting remote places and traveling the globe together. Ernestine and Roy were inseparable, never having had spent a night apart until Roy's peaceful passing in February of 2022.
Ernestine is survived by her daughters and son in law, Lisa Marie Kersey of Deer Park and Sandra Margarethe Rowan and Harold of Franklin; sons and daughter in law, Craig Stewart Floyd of South Haven, Mississippi, Michael Patrick Wood and Shawn of League City; Sister: Irmgard Modinger Hemm. Ernestine is also survived by what she considered her many blessings, her grandchildren, great grandchildren and even great great grandchildren.
