Obituary

David Keith Smithey was born in Waco, Texas on February 24, 1958, to Reverand Morris Smithey and Margaret Wooldridge Smithey of Waco. After fighting illness over the last several months, David received mercy and passed peacefully in his sleep on Friday, April 5, 2024.

He lived much of his childhood in Waco, before they moved to Houston, where he graduated high school. David accepted Jesus Christ as his savior at age 11 and recommitted himself to the Lord at 22. He met his first wife, in a church group.  They married and moved to Tennessee where they had two daughters. After divorce, he found his way back to Waco, became a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church, and eventually meeting his future wife, Shervonne Horan Davis. They lived in Bryan/College Station, where he was a member, and deacon, at Hillcrest Baptist Church.

David attended TSTI in Waco, earning a degree in information systems.  He worked as a database administrator and developer in many places, including Diego Garcia, Boeing, NASA, Nashville Public Schools, and Texas A&M University, then became a Banner developer there, eventually moving to Blinn College as their Banner Administrator.

David worked in IT because he needed to work, and had the skills, but his passion and drive was following and knowing his Lord. Shervonne frequently fussed about the stacks of theology books he kept around him; always reading, researching, praying, and buying more books!  He was an ordained minister in both Tennessee and in Texas.  He was asked to fill the pulpit one Sunday at Shiloh Baptist Church and they became members of that beloved church family when they moved to Franklin, TX in March 2020. David studied Hebrew and Greek so he could understand the original meaning of the words of the Bible.  He also bought many Bibles.  Instead of making the home a "Bible Museum," Shervonne plans to save a few for family, and make sure God's Word gets into the hands of others as it was meant to be shared.

He volunteered as a chaplain and disaster relief volunteer with Texas Baptist Men Disaster Relief and served on the CERT team at the Blinn College Bryan campus.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Morris and Margaret Wooldridge Smithey and their parents.

David is survived by his wife, Shervonne Horan Smithey, his daughters, and their husbands: Heather and Michael Jones of Spring Hill, TN, and Hannah and Timmy Jones of Lewisburg, TN, his six TN grandchildren: Nolan, Elliott, and Audrey of Spring Hill and Elena, Adalyn, and Casey of Lewisburg, and his ex-wife, Donna Auen. He also enjoyed Shervonne's kids: Jennifer Williams of Bryan, Dan and Jennifer Davis of Cypress, and Mark Davis of Franklin and his wife's grandchildren: Skyler of Bryan, Parker of Cypress and Bailey, Jaylee, and Beau all of Franklin. He also has many aunts, uncles, and cousins and their families throughout Texas and Mississippi.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 12, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. at Waco Memorial Park Cemetery in Waco, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Shiloh Baptist Church for their missions work or Texas Baptist Men Disaster Relief.
